I suppose I’m not doing The Gourds any favours by playing another cover song by the band. Their version of Snoop Dog’s Gin and Juice has remained their biggest hit despite the fact that they have nine albums of original material to their credit. Ziggy Stardust can be found on an imported Davie Bowie tribute CD from France called Bowiemania.

I imagine Lost Hombres Let It Out is to the southern sixties experience what In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida is to the rest of the country. The band stole the introduction to the song from a novelty record from the 1940s called Cigareets, Whuskey, and Wild, Wild Women. Listen for the crazy soprano.

Los Straitjackets deliver another Spanish version of an American classic, Marty Robbins’ Devil Woman.

The Lost Fingers won a 2009 Juno Award in Canada for Lost in the 80s. Their take on Stevie Wonder’s Part-Time Lover is worth a listen.

Joe “I hate my life” Pernice weighs in on a song about nuclear annihilation. His version of Up The Down Escalator by The Chameleons U.K. is included as a bonus track on the CD single 7:30 by The Pernice Brothers.

I had never heard of Polar and Loane until I strolled the Internet for great Lee Hazlewood covers. Hopefully their catchy version of Some Velvet Morning will continue to bring the dearly departed Lee and his amazing body of work to a wider audience. If anyone can fill me in on the rumour that Frank Sinatra put a hit on Lee Hazlewood after a falling out with his daughter I’d appreciate it.

Kevin Kane hasn’t come close to the limelight since the demise of his band The Grapes of Wrath, but that’s no reason to over look a still talented Canadian songwriter. Here he is with friend Neko Case covering one of the Go-Gos biggest hits.

Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs just released Under The Covers, Volume 2. Their cover of And Your Bird Can Sing is a primer for what you’ll find on the exceptional Volume 1. Pure pop goodness.

    Enjoy the show!
